한 이름 없는 화자가 들려주는 "실비오(Silvio)"라는 명사수에 대한 이야기다. 어느 날 전입 온 실비오는 화자에게 우상 같은 존재가 됐다. 유명한 명사수일 뿐만 아니라 다른 군인들과는 달리 책도 읽고, 샴페인이 가득한 훌륭한 저녁 만찬도 즐겼기 때문이다. 하지만 카드 게임에서 신병에게 모욕을 당했음에도 불구하고 당시 관습이었던 "결투(duel)"를 신청하지 않아 실망한다. 겁쟁이라 여기며 그를 멀리했다. 얼마가 지나고 전보를 받은 실비오가 갑자기 군대를 떠나려 했다. 떠나기 전 실비오는 왜 그때 신병에게 결투를 신청하지 않았는지 들려줬다. 과거 경기병이었던 시절 그는 상남자로 동료 군인들의 인기를 한 몸에 받았었다. 하지만 잘생기고 그처럼 총도 잘 쏘는 장교가 들어오자 경쟁심을 느끼기 시작했다. 새로 온 장교는 심지어 집도 잘 살았고 여인들한테 인기도 많았었다. 그가 아니 꼬았던 실비오는 그와 결투를 벌였다. 긴장한 실비오와는 달리 새로 온 장교는 총앞에서도 여유롭게 체리를 먹었다. 실비오는 죽음을 두려워하지 않는 그에게 복수를 다짐하며 다음을 기약했다. 위험을 감수하며 신병과 결투를 펼치지 않았던 이유가 바로 이 복수 때문이었다.
몇 년 후 제대한 화자는 시골 마을에서 종종 군대 때의 삶을 그리워하며 무미건조한 일상을 보냈다. 그러던 중 이웃이었던 백작 부부의 집을 방문하게 되었다. 두 개의 총알 구멍이 똑같은 곳에 있는 스위스 풍경화를 발견했다. 이를 본 화자는 실비오에 대한 이야기를 했고, 백작은 결혼 직후 실비오와 결투를 벌인 사람이 바로 자신이라고 밝혔다. 실비오를 맞추지 못한 백작이 그의 총앞에서 죽음의 공포에 떨고 있을 때 울면서 결투를 말리는 백작 부인에게 동정심이 느낌 실비오가 또 한 번 자신을 살려줬다고 했다. 그 후 실비오의 자취는 찾을 수 없었고 전사했다는 소식만이 들려왔다.
This novel is a story about an unnamed narrator who tells a story about a marksman called "Silvio." Silvio, who moved in one day, became a like an idol for the narrator. Not only was he a famous marksman, but he read books and enjoyed a great dinner filled with champagne unlike other soldiers. However, he was disappointed that Silvio did not apply for the "duel," which was the custom at the time, despite being insulted by a new recruit in a card game. They kept him away, thinking he was a coward. After some time, Silvio suddenly tried to leave the army when he received the telegram. Before leaving, Silvio told the narrators why they did not ask for a duel. In the past as a matchman, he was popular with fellow soldiers as a man’s man. However, he became competitive when a handsome and shooting officer like him came in. The new officer was even well-off and popular with women. Silvio, who was disgusted, dueled with him. The new officer leisurely ate cherry in front of the gun unlike Silvio, who was nervous. Silvio vowed revenge on him, who was not afraid of death, and made a promise to the following. It was because of this revenge that he did not duel with the new recruit at the risk.
The narrator, who was discharged after a few years, often spent a dry life in a rural village longing for his life in the military. Meanwhile, the narrator visited the house of the Count and his neighbors and found a Swiss landscape painting with two bullet holes in the same place. He told about Silvio after seeing this, and the Count revealed that he was the one who dueled with Silvio shortly after marriage. When the Count who failed to match Silvio was in fear of death in front of his gun, Silvio once again saved him because he felt sympathy for the Countess who cried and stopped the duel. After that, there was no trace of Silvio, and only news came out that he had died.

당시 시대상에 비춰보면 이 소설은 진정한 남성성과 용기, 명예에 대한 답을 보여준다. 실비오는 명사수로서 꾸준하게 훈련하며 전문성까지 갖췄다. 또한 결투에 헌신하지 않는 백작을 보며 단순히 죽음이라는 육체적 승리뿐 아니라 자신의 총구 앞에서 두려움에 떨게 만드는 정신적인 승리까지 거머쥐려 한다. 이같이 자신의 명예를 찾기 위해 겁쟁이 소리를 들으면서도 복수의 칼날을 가는 실비오는 진정한 남성성의 상징이다. 그리고 정신적인 승리를 쟁취한 그는 "죽음"이라는 육체적 승리보다는 용서를 택하며 용사다운 면모를 보인 뒤 홀연히 사라진다. 전형적인 상남자의 모습이다. 하지만 과거 상남자의 "명예로운" 행동이 21세기인 작금의 사회에서도 과연 가치 있는 일일까? 명예롭게 결투를 벌이면 상남자고 피하면 겁쟁이로 낙인찍는 이분법적 사고에 고개를 갸우뚱했다. 복수 외에 새롭게 진정한 용기와 대결, 남자다움에 대한 답을 찾아야 하지 않을까. 마초다운 해결책 말고도 자신의 명예를 지킬 수 있는 행동이 참 많은 시대다.
In light of the times, the novel showed true masculinity, courage, and honor. Silvio as a marksman had expertise by practicing constantly. Seeing the Count who was not committed to a duel, Silvio tried not only to win physical victory of death but also to win a mental victory that made him fear in front of his gun. Silvio, who endured being called a coward while trying to getting back at the Count was a true symbol of masculinity. After acquiring mental victory, Silvio chose forgiveness rather than physical victory of death and disappeared suddenly. He was a typical man’s man. However, was the "honor" behavior of manly men of the past worthwhile in today's society of the 21st century? I was puzzled by the dichotomy of thinking that engaging in a duel makes one a real man and honorable, while refraining from it would brand someone a coward. Shouldn't we seek alternatives to defining true courage, confrontation, and manliness that do not rely on revenge? There are many actions that can protect one's reputation other than macho solutions.
